Red, white and blue potatoes

If you planted your potatoes in March or April, and they have flowered, you can harvest baby potatoes now (or perhaps even teenage potatoes!). Dig around very gently at the base of your plants – you may be able to locate the potatoes best by touch. Plan to eat this harvest very soon after you dig. My crop this year is Blue Adirondack. Here’s a baby Blue with a Red Pontiac dug from the demo garden:

Here they are sliced open, so you can see the blue interior (it’s actually more purple):

When Blue Adirondacks are cooked, the insides turn pale lavender. They were delicious!

A bit of trivia about Blue Adirondack: this cultivar was used to produce blue potato chips as part of a blue-and-white mix made by Utz to celebrate Penn State’s football team.
